Things to see and do in Colchester

Essex has Britains oldest ever recorded town in history in Colchester. Filled with history and packed with all types of heritage and stories from time gone by, this town attracts tourists every year in mass with figures over 4 million per annum.

Despite being an old town and famous for this, today the town is pretty modern with many attractions that reflect that claim. The town centre is packed full of shops, restaurants and bars that come to live of a night, to the famous Colchester zoo and the Castle.

Colchester caters for everyone, any age from any background. The youngsters and families can soak up the history in the Castle and some old parts of Colchester town. The Zoo is also a very popular choice with the younger audience that come and visit the area.

The Zoo is regarded as one of the most finest in Europe due to their constant development to improving all aspects of it operation. Colchester zoo even has won awards for the “Large Visitor Attraction of Year” and for “Sustainable Tourism. Colchester Zoo is home to over 270 species of animal, insects and birds across o60 odd acres of land (including lakes).

Colchester can cater for anything kid of visit you can think of, such as a holiday for the family, a day trip to an attraction or a short city break. The younger clubbers looking for a weekend away with some night life, then the pubs and clubs here are defiantly worth a look.

For the more quiet Colchester experience then there is a lot to see still. Abberton Reservoir Nature Reserve allows you to take in some of the great outdoors, with some spectacular views and bird watching opportunities. The reserve is set on around 1200 acres so can keep you entertained for along time.

There is also Bourne Mill is a 16th century water mill built from stone, set beside a picturesque stream. If you have time there is even the Natural History Museum and focuses in on the history of Colchester and the natural heritage of north east Essex. This is an ideal visit if you are into you wildlife.
