Wickham Bishops is very close to Maldon on the Blackwater estuary. Along side Colchester, these towns are the two oldest in Essex and are full of history. It is said that King Edward the Elder lived in Maldon will fighting against the Danish trying to settle in East Anglia. Parts of the town architecture are worth seeing, with some old building still standing with character. Promenade Park is also worth a look in the summer months and has been a hot spot in Maldon for many years with families looking for a cheap day out. Over the past view years; the Park has had a lot of money spent on trying to improve the area including the new children’s water park. Kids will loves the new Splash Park that opened in 2006. Promenade Park has much bird life living close to the Blackwater estuary, including some swans who make the park home. There is also a galleon, crabbing lake and Skate Park. If you get hungry then there are plenty of food kiosks that supply most food, drink and ice creams that you could require on day out. Maldon has some old churches such as All Saints and Saint Marys Church. St Marys is a white steeple church with a spire said to be used as a welcome beacon for sailors coming home up the river. All Saints is an old stone and flint build church and is regarded as one of the most interesting to visit due to its triangular tower. If you enjoy walking and have done the Promenade Park then you might want to check out the remains of the old railway line that finished being use in the 60’s. The train line was used between Maldon and Witham and some parts of it still remains that you can walk along. The remains of St Giles Hospital can be found close to the town centre. This hospital was used to try and help lepers in the area. Later in its life it did become a barn as part of a farm until its roof collapsed. It was then left as it is, the remains of the original hospital. Over the years, restoration has taken place dating back to the later 1920’s. So Maldon is full of history, things to see, outdoor activities and great walks. There is something for everyone ranging from old buildings, ruins, wildlife and beautiful parks to stroll through.
