A short drive away into the picturesque village of Little Braxted you will find The Green Man pub with its great charm and character and this pub/restaurant is well worth a visit. The pub also offers great British ales and home cooked food. Please see the link below;

Another recommendation set in the countryside/village of Great Braxted is the Ducane restaurant;

http://www.theducane.co.uk/

An award winning restaurant, 2010 and 2011 Essex Life Food and Drink awards, the Ducane was once a pub which has been turned into a restaurant well known for fine dining.

The name DuCane comes from the late Lord of the Manor Peter du Cane, Esq. of Coggeshall, who settled at Braxted in 1751, and was sheriff of the county and M.P. for Colchester in 1745.

The inspiration behind The DuCane as you see it today, is the realisation of a dream. Jonathan the Chef/patron, a local lad had always wanted to open a first class venue to provide a theatre for his cooking skills. Offering discerning diners, tasty fresh locally sourced food that won t break the bank, delicious wine, good beer and lots of banter to enjoy in an informal and convivial setting.

A few miles away in the village of Hatfield Peverel is the wonderful restaurant, The Blue Strawberry Bistrot which opened approximately in 2000 and is still as popular as ever. Open every day for lunch and every evening, except Sunday, the Blue Strawberry has a huge following and reservations are advised. Situated right on The Street in Hatfield Peverel it is easy to find. The owner, Spin, has also opened a sister restaurant in Boreham, The Lion Inn, and this is also thriving after opening about 2009.

The Lion is considerably larger than the Blue Strawberry and you are unable to pre-book a table unless it is for a party of 10 or more. The food in both establishments is consistently good. Boreham is a 5 minute drive from Hatfield Peverel and there is ample space for parking at the Lion. Please see the links below;

Two highly recommended pub/restaurants which are little further away, 15 minutes drive, are The Square and Compasses, Terling and The Dog and Gun Country Restaurant, Little Waltham. The Square and Compasses has an friendly bar/restaurant area with good guest ales available. There is also a small intimate function room upstairs which seats approximately 14 people and this can of course be pre-booked for a special occasion. Set in the quiet little hamlet of Fuller Street/Terling its a lovely venue for a lunch on a sunny day or a superb dinner around the log fire.

Head towards Hatfield Peverel and turn right into Station Road in the centre of the village. Follow this road over the station bridge and you will enter Terling. Carry on through the village of Terling heading towards Fuller Street. You will drive through country lanes for a further 10 minutes. Take the right, signposted to Fuller Street. Follow this lane and The Square and Compasses is on the right when entering the village.

For The Dog and Gun you also take the same road out of Hatfield Peverel and at the junction of the Cock Inn you turn right, keep following this road, Waltham Road, for at least 10 minutes and you will see The Dog and Gun on your left. A row of period houses which have been merged together to make a super restaurant with outside seating to enjoy the setting.

The nearest town to White House Farm is Witham. It is a 5 minute drive away has a large selection of pubs and restaurants. The pubs are full of character and the restaurant range is enormous from traditional British food to Indian, Chinese, Thai and Greek, a truly international flavour.

For Chinese food you can t beat Lians. The beautiful period house on Newland Street is home to a Chinese renowned for the quality of the food as it is second to none. Lians is slightly more expensive than Rias which is also in the town. We would also recommend Rias which can be found just off of Newland Street in the precinct. You would need to pre-book Lians for a Friday or Saturday night reservation - 01376 510 684.

The Thai Cottage is a super restaurant based at the end of Newland Street serving excellent authentic Thai food and you are guaranteed a charming welcome from the charming Thai staff. There is public parking just opposite the restaurant which is convenient for walking to all the restaurants in town.

Witham has several good Indian restaurants but personal recommendations are Omars, again in the village of Hatfield Peverel, and The Maldon Tandoori which is in the nearby quayside town of Maldon. Omars has a fantastic extensive menu and is unique in its quaintness and size. The restaurant only seats approx 20 people so again Friday and Saturday reservations are advised. The restaurant is not licensed but you are welcome to take your own alcohol, no corkage charged.

The Maldon Tandoori is a past winner of an Essex Food and Drink Award, 2010, and having just undergone some refurbishment you can enjoy delicious food in a great atmosphere. The restaurant specialises in Bangladeshi cuisine and is to be found on Maldon High Street, we would again recommend pre-booking on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Also on the same street and virtually opposite is the super Chinese restaurant, House of Delight. A great menu and warm welcome make this a worthwhile visit. Not a huge restaurant in size you may wish to pre-book - 01621 854854.

If you don t want to cook very much during your stay at White House Farm you can always order a take-away meal from most of the ethnic restaurants in Witham. Some of the takeaway establishments in Witham and the nearby village of Hatfield Peverel will deliver to White House Farm. For Indian food we would especially recommend the two below from whom delivery is usually free of charge;

The Bikash Tandoori, Witham - 01376 510 341
